The 2nd annual Montréal Climate Summit: Montréal Leaders United in Ambition and Mobilized in Action

Montréal, February 16, 2023 The Montréal Climate Partnership, in collaboration with the City of Montréal, is inviting business, philanthropic, political, community, environmental, student and citizen leaders of all backgrounds to the 2nd annual Montréal Climate Summit. The goal of the event is to accelerate the pace of climate action in Montréal by 2030 and to stock of the progress made since last year. The event will feature key stakeholders from across the Montréal metropolitan area, who will convene at the Grand Quay of the Port of Montreal on May 9 and 10, 2023.

The 2023 Montréal Climate Summit comes on the heels of a highly successful first edition of the event, which brought together over 500 participants and saw key Montréal stakeholders make commitments to decarbonize buildings and ramp up climate change resilience and adaptation efforts. The interest shown by civil society has been noteworthy, and the second edition of this now annual meeting is poised to be even more ambitious than the first. The summit was planned in collaboration with twenty key partners and is expected  to lead to further commitments that will shape the future of Montréal.

“The Montreal community is once again demonstrating its determination to respond to the climate emergency,” said Montréal Mayor Valérie Plante. “To meet the climate challenge, ensure an inclusive climate transition and secure resilient communities, we must all work together. The City of Montréal will continue to be a force for good and commit to strong action, as we did during COP15. Important announcements will be made during the Climate Summit.”

“The collaboration between economic, philanthropic, institutional and community leaders at last year’s Montréal Climate Summit allowed us to make major advances in the climate struggle and in Montréal’s resilience,” said Montréal Climate Summit co-chairs Karel Mayrand, President and CEO of the Foundation of Greater Montréal, and Éric St-Pierre, Executive Director of the Trottier Family Foundation. “That collaboration will be even more important this year, as we really try to push the boundaries of what is possible. We are bringing together leaders of all backgrounds so that we can come up with tangible, achievable solutions in areas such as transport, decarbonization of buildings and resilience.”

The 2023 program: Forging new paths and turning ideas into reality

The 2023 Climate Summit will kick off with a round table of important stakeholders, who will make pivotal new commitments. The ambitious summit will last two days, with an emphasis on finding solutions for and ways to:

  • Accelerate building and transportation decarbonization
  • Transition to an equitable and sustainable transport system
  • Use the fight against climate change, including adaptation efforts, as a means to reduce inequality
  • Reinforce the growing role of the business and finance community in the fight against climate change
  • Further integrate the philanthropic and healthcare sectors into the city’s climate efforts

About the Montréal Climate Partnership

Launched at the initiative of the Foundation of Greater Montreal and the Trottier Family Foundation, the Partenariat Climat Montréal (PCM), the Climate Montreal Partnership (CMP) is an independent initiative, first established by the Trottier Family Foundation and the Foundation of Greater Montréal, that brings together more than one hundred economic, community, institutional and philanthropic organizations. Its mission is to mobilize key players in the Montreal community to help reduce GHG emissions by 55% by 2030 and put the city on the path to carbon neutrality by 2050.

The MCP builds on the successful collaboration established in 2018-19 by a group of philanthropic foundations with the City of Montreal and the C40 Cities organization to develop the City’s Climate Plan and is inspired by the best engagement models internationally, such as the Green Ribbon Commission in Boston and London Business Climate Leaders. The partnership places the city among the leading global metropolises in the C40 by making the ecological transition a pillar of its prosperity and attractiveness.

The initiative is funded by the Foundation of Greater Montréal, the Trottier Family Foundation, the McConnell Foundation and the City of Montréal.
