Hugo Séguin
Senior Advisor
Hugo joined COPTICOM as a Senior Advisor in March 2011. He advises the organization’s clients and partners as an expert on socio-ecological issues for the public.
Hugo holds a doctorate from the University of Oregon in Environmental Studies. Hugo is also a fellow of the Center for International Studies and Research at the University of Montreal (CÉRIUM) and teaches at the School of Applied Politics at the University of Sherbrooke.
Over the past 30 years, Hugo has worked for the Quebec Ministry of International Affairs, the Office of the Leader of the Official Opposition (Ottawa), and the Office of the Minister of Culture and Communications (Quebec) before becoming Deputy Chief of Staff at the Quebec Ministry of the Environment. He spent ten years as Energy and Climate Coordinator at Équiterre, before joining COPTICOM in 2011. A specialist in international climate negotiations, he has participated in more than 15 of them, regularly leading university student delegations. A member of the Quebec government’s Advisory Committee on Climate Change until January 2023, he has been chair of Climate Action Network Canada and served on the boards of Greenpeace Canada, Vivre en Ville, Climate Action Network International as well as Ecojustice Canada. His book Lettre aux écolos impatients et à ceux qui trouvent qu’ils exagèrent [Letter to Impatient Environmentalists and to Those Who Think They’re Exaggerating] was published by Écosociété in April 2022.
